Reduce Throttle Lag with Windbooster Australia!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Windbooster work?

The Windbooster throttle controller modifies the voltage signal from the fly by wire pedal assembly to allow you to tune the response from your accelerator pedal and greatly reduce the dead zone from when you initially depress the pedal commonly referred to as throttle lag. The Windbooster is providing new points of reference for the vehicle's throttle mapping. It is still working within the standard parameters, however, depending on the setting, with a sharper throttle curve. It is also bringing the throttle in earlier in the pedal stroke to reduce the throttle lag or dead zone in the pedal.

Does the Windbooster increase power output?

No, Windbooster throttle controllers won’t increase power output. They have no control over fuel mapping, air fuel ratio or injection timing etc. Windbooster simply change the way your throttle responds for sharper response. Although the exact result is hard to explain it basically wakes the car up and makes the acceleration feel less lazy.

Is the Windbooster suitable for Manual Transmission?

Windbooster throttle controllers have settings suited to both Automatic and Manual transmissions. There is a slightly softer setting to compensate for the direct drive nature of the manual transmission. The manual transmission setting can also be used for vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions if the driver feels the response is too touchy.

Will a Windbooster void my new car warranty?

Any aftermarket/non-genuine modification you make to your new car will have an impact on your new car warranty if it is deemed to have caused the issue you are seeking warranty on. In respect to Windbooster, Windbooster Australia has done extensive testing to ensure a correctly fitted Windbooster won’t damage your vehicle. The Windbooster has been designed so that if it develops a fault, the vehicle can be put back to factory settings and the vehicle will return to normal operation.  If you are ever concerned, simply remove the Windbooster and plug the factory wiring back into the pedal assembly. In the unlikely event that the Windbooster does damage your vehicle the Windbooster is fully covered by our product liability insurance.

How will the Windbooster affect my fuel economy?

In testing we see no change in fuel economy. In real world scenarios, the majority of customers see no real change. A large percentage of customers see an increase in economy using the lower (P) settings due to more efficient use of the throttle. A small number of customers do experience slightly worse economy. If you are worried about reduced fuel economy, you can simply dial the mode down until you’re happy.

Is the Windbooster a universal or vehicle specific fitment?

Although there are many shared applications, each Windbooster application is relatively unique to each vehicle. Please check our application guide to see if your model is available. If you don't see your vehicle listed, please feel free to contact us to check as we add new applications all the time.

Is the Windbooster suitable for petrol vehicles?

The Windbooster throttle controller can be used on both naturally aspirated and forced induction Petrol and Diesel engines.

Is the Windbooster hard to install?

On most vehicles, a Windbooster can be installed in less than 2 minutes with no special tools or technical knowledge required. It is a simple plug and play device that is designed to specifically integrate into your vehicle.

Can I just press the accelerator down faster to replicate the same response?

Windbooster throttle controllers work in 2 ways. When you first depress the pedal there is what is referred to as a dead zone where there is very little response. No matter how hard or fast you hit the pedal you can't overcome this. The Windbooster converts this signal to action, greatly reducing this dead zone.

The second part is opening the throttle earlier in the pedal stroke, in theory you might be able to replicate this by pressing the pedal faster and harder, but in practice you can't. For anyone who doubts the effectiveness of a Windbooster throttle controller, I highly recommend taking advantage of our 30-day money back guarantee. If you are not 100% happy with the result you can send it back for a full refund – no questions asked.

When the Windbooster was first launched on the market on one of the Ford Rangers forums there was a gentleman who constantly told perspective customers they were wasting their money and could just put their foot down harder to get the same result. After weeks of this person’s negative comments – I offered to send him one with an invoice. If he was happy with it he could pay the invoice, if not I would pay for the return postage. Not only did he pay the invoice, he then went on to post a full apology and very generous product review.

How many ‘Modes’ does the Windbooster have?

Windbooster are equipped with a very intuitive display and settings menu for ease of use. There are 3 main ‘Mode’ settings across the range and depending on the model of Windbooster there can be some additional modes.

  • Normal We call it normal mode as it is technically still working, Normal mode is a replication of the factory setting.

  • Economy (E) Economy has 9 settings that reduce the response from the pedal – it generally does not result in much better fuel economy as such, but it can be handy in certain situations which I will discuss further down.

  • Performance (P) Ultimate performance can be grouped into 3 stages

0-3 – Everyday driving with smooth acceleration

4-6 – Sportier, more responsive feel – will suit most users

7-9 – Performance for more aggressive acceleration and towing

Can I change the Windbooster setting at any time?

Through our testing we ensured no damage can be done changing the setting on the fly. I suggest to customers not to change during acceleration, rather foot off the pedal and adjust the setting while coasting. Of course, from a road safety point of view it is better to be stopped but not essential to the operation of the unit.

When would I use the different ‘Modes’ and ‘Settings’?

Off-Road

  • Sand – When bogged down in soft sand and you need slow wheel speed to get up on top of the sand rather than dig deeper the higher Economy settings can help to control slow wheel speed.
  • Rocky/Rough Terrain – The Economy settings can be very handy to smooth jerky acceleration caused by the driver's foot bouncing uncontrollably
  • Mud – Performance/Race settings can help where you want quick snaps of the accelerator to clear mud in the tyres to help with digging down for traction.

On-Road

  • Rain – Economy mode can help reduce excessive wheel spin by reducing the responsive of acceleration.
  • Track – Higher Performance/Race modes will give you maximum acceleration.
  • General Driving – Lower Performance/Race modes will give you a little more response while maintaining a comfortable smooth take off.

Will the Windbooster work with other modifications?

  • Aftermarket Cruise Control – Yes, to date we have not seen any aftermarket cruise control that won't work with a Windbooster including units that plug directly into the fly by wire system.

  • ECU Tune / Re-flash – Yes, Windbooster throttle controllers can still be used after an ECU tune/re- flash. In most instances’ tuners don't alter throttle parameters. Even when throttle parameters are changed the adjustability of throttle response that the Windbooster provides can still be quite useful.

  • Performance Chips– Yes, Performance chips work on different parameters of the vehicle so a Windbooster will only compliment the positive effects of performance chips.

My Windbooster doesn't turn off?

Windbooster throttle controllers don't require their own power source. They rely on power from the accelerator pedal. In many vehicles when power to the ignition is cut many accessories take some time to power down. You may find it will take 30 seconds or more before your Windbooster turns off. It may also turn off during periods of inactivity such as when cruise control is in operation but while the Windbooster is still active the display simply turns to stand-by mode.

What ‘Warranty’ does the Windbooster come with?

The Windbooster comes with a 30-day money back guarantee for customers to try and if they are not happy with the results it can be returned for a full refund. We also sell them with a limited 5 years warranty.
